It's officially summer, and I couldn't be more thrilled for the new season to begin. Frozen drinks, flip flops, and long summer nights where you can actually feel like you have an evening after you quit work; it's definitely my favorite time of year. It's also the perfect time to switch out our daily essentials, and carry items that help us get through the warmer weather. Here are a few suggestions (and some of my personal faves) that can help us stay fresh and protected.
Sunglasses- We all know this is a definite and we probably already have a favorite pair. However, it's important to know that your sunglasses shouldn't just be super cute, they should actually protect your eyes. One way to make sure that your sunnies are safeguarding peepers is to read the label. They should say the lenses block out 99% to 100% of UV radiation, and make sure they block out both UVA and UVB rays. You also want to ensure they block out as much sun as possible...so the bigger the better. Athletic sunglasses have the best coverage because they wrap around and cover the side of your eyes.
Beauty products with SPF- We're supposed to use sunscreen everyday to shield our skin, but it can be hard to remember...especially when we're not planning on going to the beach or lying by the pool. A great way to incorporate coverage is to use everyday beauty products with SPF protection. This can can be your lotion, foundation, and lip balm. When you’re choosing SPF cosmetics and lotions, look for the term “broad spectrum,” which means the product contains sunscreens that block both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays, which account for about 95 percent of the sun’s UV radiation, penetrate into deeper layers of the skin. UVA rays, also play a significant part in skin aging and wrinkling, and may play a role in the development of skin cancer, so make sure you're doing all you can to protect yourself.
Hair ties- I carry hair ties everywhere I go. Mainly because I have a ton of hair and it's naturally curly, which means my hair elastics break on a daily basis. Carrying a few ties in your bag can be a lifesaver, especially when it's humid and your hair tends to frizz. I've definitely left my house thinking my hairstyle was super cute, and then am horrified at the puffy mess I see when I look in the mirror later.
Water bottle- Carrying a water bottle is another obvious must-have, no matter what the weather is actually, but more so when the weather is hot and steamy As busy women, who are always on the go, it can be very easy to not stay hydrated throughout your day. Generally the rule is to drink eight 8-ounce glasses, which equals about 2 liters, or half a gallon. Since everyone doesn't love drinking plain water all the time, try infusing your water with fruit, herbs, or vegetables.
Comfy flip flops- One of the best things about the new season for me is that I don't have to wear shoes. Everyone who knows me, knows how much I love being barefoot. That's why I always carry a pair of comfy, light flip flops in my bag. My absolute favorite brand is Havaianas, because they last forever and make super cute colors. Even if they're a $5 pair from your local drugstore you'll be very happy you have a backup when your expensive new shoes are killing your feet, or those sandals you always wear break when you're out and about.
Travel size deodorant and perfume- Who doesn't want to always smell good? But in the summer, staying fresh all the time can be hard to do, especially when you're running from meeting to meeting and/or chasing a little one around. So I carry a travel size deodorant and perfume in my everyday bag. It's a great solution to battle body odor when you're on the go. Many people are becoming more concerned with what's in their deodorant because it can be absorbed into your skin and glands, so just make sure to read labels and ingredients in your products.
